Lost in Translation, the Workbook
Growing up in high-control religious spaces, the most dangerous thing you could possess was an open, curious mind.
If you ever noticed a glaring contradiction in a sermon, or if a specific rule felt instinctively cruel to your basic human empathy, you were immediately handed a weaponized proof-text: “Lean not unto thine own understanding.”
We were taught that our critical thinking was a trap, our questions were a sign of rebellion, and our intelligence was a spiritual liability. We were trained to default to a position of profound self-doubt, assuming that if the Bible seemed harsh, we were the ones with the moral flaw.
But this wasn’t just abstract theology—it was an incredibly effective tool for behavioral conditioning. This systematic dismantling of intellectual self-trust was exactly how we were groomed to hand over our autonomy to an institutional machine.
From a very young age, the subtext of every sermon series, Bible drill, and topical study was clear: The text is a flat, uniform checklist of legal statutes. Your job is not to understand it; your job is to comply.
You were taught that spiritual maturity meant completely flattening your intellectual boundaries, silencing your historical questions, and outsourcing your discernment to an external authority—to the pastors, the commentaries, and the gatekeepers who claimed to hold the exclusive keys to the text.
If you pointed out that the laws of Leviticus were being cherry-picked, you were told your heart was compromised. If you wondered why the writers of scripture openly argued with each other across centuries, you were told you were sliding down a slippery slope.
By the time you were an adult, the system had successfully disconnected your intellect from your faith. You had been completely untethered from your own God-given capacity to read between the lines, so that you would willingly stay dependent on a rulebook designed to keep you small, compliant, and silent.
The Vertigo of the Open Space
When you finally begin to step away from those rigid interpretations, a terrifying kind of vertigo sets in.
The moment you start questioning the traditional dogmas or reading the text on your own terms, the old programming triggers a massive wave of panic. You make a choice to step away from a toxic teaching, and then immediately spiral into anxiety: “Am I being led by truth, or am I just falling into selfish deception? If I don’t believe this specific verse the way they taught it, does that mean my entire faith is shattering?”
It is a brilliant psychological trap. If the institution can convince you that you are fundamentally incapable of reading an open library without their fear-based filters, you will always have to return to them to do your thinking for you. You will stay dependent on their checklists, their definitions, and their gatekeepers just to feel safe.
But I want to tell you something very clearly today: Your intellect is not a sin. Your empathy is not a liability. Your critical questions are not a rebellion.
When a traditional reading of scripture commands you to override basic human kindness and protect an abusive power structure, choosing love isn’t a lack of faith—that is standing in the exact interpretive lineage of Jesus.
